What is the abortion pill? How does it work?
The abortion pill is an early pregnancy termination method and is also known as a chemical or medication abortion. It consists of two different drugs, and it's taken in one or two doses. The first medication blocks the hormone progesterone, and the second medication starts early labor. It goes by many names, including missed period pills, at-home abortion, self-managed abortion, 10-week-after pills, medication, medical, or chemical abortion.
If you are considering ordering the abortion pill, it's important to rule out an ectopic pregnancy or a natural miscarriage and find out how far along you are via ultrasound. Conception calculators can only estimate this information. While we do not provide or refer for abortion services, we can provide answers and options so you can make a fully informed choice. When can you take the abortion pill?
The abortion pill is FDA-approved up through 10 weeks after a woman's last menstrual period. The number of pills ordered is determined by how far along you are.
The abortion pill is not an option for people with certain medical conditions, if the pregnancy is not viable, or if the pregnancy occurs outside of the uterus. Note: It is not the same as emergency contraceptives.
Is it safe to order the abortion pill by mail?
While you can order abortion pills by mail, it is a risk to your health and safety. Make an appointment today to confirm your pregnancy and how far along you are. This information can help you plan your next steps.
FDA Warning on Abortion Pills By Mail: Do Not Buy Mifeprex Over the Internet
You should not buy Mifeprex over the Internet because you will bypass important safeguards designed to protect your health. Mifeprex has special safety restrictions on how it is distributed to the public. Also, drugs purchased from foreign Internet sources are not the FDA-approved versions of the drugs, and they are not subject to FDA-regulated manufacturing controls or FDA inspection of manufacturing facilities.
Who is eligible for abortion pills?
Women with certain medical conditions, who have allergies to drugs used in the abortion pill regimen, have an ectopic pregnancy, or who are more than 10 weeks pregnant are not eligible for the abortion pill.
The abortion pill is ineffective in the case of an ectopic pregnancy, which is a pregnancy that occurs within the fallopian tube or somewhere else in a woman’s body other than the uterus.
An ectopic pregnancy, if left untreated, can cause the fallopian tube to rupture, resulting in lethal bleeding. Abortion procedures are not used to treat ectopic pregnancies. A separate surgical procedure is necessary to treat an ectopic pregnancy.
Like any drug, weight, hormones, allergies, health conditions, diseases, and the type of pregnancy can cause side effects to vary. If you have taken the first dose of the abortion pill and change your mind, contact the abortion pill reversal network to learn more about your options.
Note: If you are Rh-negative, be sure to tell your healthcare provider so you can get the necessary treatment after an abortion.
